Community Gardening and Classes for Lifespan Local’s Alma Program Participants

Proposal Due Date: April 1, 2026

Proposal Overview:

Lifespan Local serves moms and their very young children through Alma, our maternal mental health program. We provide home visitation services, community gathering spaces and diaper/clothing distribution to support families as we cultivate a caring and supportive community. We want to add gardening activities and classes to our menu of experience to further support moms as we gather, cook food that we have grown together, learn about nutrition and healthy eating habits, and honor cultural traditions. We are seeking a team of bilingual (Spanish) service providers who are experienced and trained in gardening, nutrition and healthy eating to offer a gardening program for our Alma program at the Alma location.

Goals:

  • Goal 1: Establish and maintain ongoing; a healthy garden that is large enough to host 10-15 families/week and can produce enough leafy greens and vegetables to feed Alma families throughout the summer.

  • Goal 2: Design and offer weekly gardening experiences and classes over a 6-month period that honor culture and teach gardening basics (preparing the soil, seeding, planting, irrigation design and set-up, garden maintenance, harvesting and preparing for winter). Classes should be designed for families with caregivers and children gardening and learning together.

  • Goal 3: Evaluate the benefits of the garden experiences and gardening classes for the participants.

Deliverables:

  1. Spreadsheet that captures number of participants and basic demographics that describe those participants

  2. Report that summarizes gardening experiences and classes offered over the 6 months of gardening activities

  3. Evaluation report that captures the feedback of the participants in the gardening/growing activities and gardening classes

Project Term:

April 13-October 17, 2026 (weather permitting)

Budget:

Not To Exceed $11,000.00; 33% of contracted total will be paid at project start, 33% will be paid mid-project (7/13/26) and remaining balance paid upon receipt of deliverables.
