Why Legal Services?

Legal problems significantly affect people's lives and are often social determinants of health, directly impacting physical and mental well-being. Medical-Legal Partnerships demonstrate that legal interventions can significantly decrease days with poor physical and mental health, and reduce ER visits and missed appointments.

Applying national statistics to Westwood's demographics, it's estimated that at least 1,080 of our neighbors experienced a legal problem in the past year, and 756 of them were significantly impacted by the problem.

Eighty-six percent of civil legal problems reported by low-income Americans receive inadequate or no legal help. Cost and language are consistently cited as the largest barriers to legal services. People also don't seek professional help because they try to deal with problems on their own, don't know where to look, or don't recognize their problem as a legal issue.

This evidence strongly supports integrating legal services into a community well-being framework, like Blossom House. By addressing legal needs, Lifespan Local can provide comprehensive support that directly contributes to the overall health and stability of the community.
