Peer Mentor - Alma Program (20 Hours/Week)

Position Summary 

Lifespan Local is a fast moving, innovative, and community-driven organization. Alma is a community home visitation program for families, parents, and caregivers who are expecting or have a child three years old or younger. Additionally, Alma offers family and child programs, including playgroups, diaper and baby supply distribution, and other initiatives to support community connections and well-being.  

Alma serves families and young children in Southwest Denver and other under-resourced surrounding neighborhoods, which are characterized as richly diverse, multilanguage, multicultural communities. This project focuses on Vietnamese and Vietnamese American families, Native American families, Middle Eastern families, Latin-American Spanish or English-speaking families, as well as families from our refugee communities. 

The Alma peer mentor is expected to build trusting relationships with families and support parents and caregivers to practice and learn the Alma skills that support their health and well-being. The selected candidate will be trained in the methods used and implementation of the Alma program.

Essential Functions 

  • Implementation of Alma program, including behavioral activation and well-being supports.

  • Conduct home visits or meet in neighborhood locations with families for 8-10 visits.   

  • Identify beneficial resources or services based on families' experiences and connect them to the family navigator in the team.  

  • Capture and track program data at regular intervals.

  • Participate in sessions of reflective supervision and case conferencing, trainings, and team meetings.

  • Participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of Alma initiatives (events, quality improvement projects, and others). 

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Skill Requirements 

  • Has experience nurturing and caring for families or individuals and connecting families as demonstrated by experience as community navigator/educator.

  • Is personable and trustworthy, being able to hold confidential information. 

  • Demonstrates familiarity with computers and data tracking.  

  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently, is detailed-oriented, and has strong problem-solving skills. 

  • Demonstrates respect for families, being able to observe, follow, support and nurture the relationship without imposing own beliefs. 

  • Demonstrates appreciation for the parent-child relationship and holds that relationship as sacred. 

  • Cultivates a learning mindset demonstrating curiosity and ability to reflect and learn from past experiences. 

  • Demonstrates appreciation for other cultures and multicultural work environments.

  • Has earned High school diploma or equivalent, from the US or another country. 

  • Bilingual and/or bicultural, with any of the languages or cultures served through the Alma program. 

  • Must pass a comprehensive background check- requires social security number (SSN). 

  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance. 

Expected Work Hours        

Work schedule is Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekends.  

Typical Physical Demands  

Required sitting, standing, bending and reaching. May require lifting up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, the telephone and other office and/or clinical equipment. Program is delivered in participants’ homes, Lifespan Offices and other locations; precautions related to COVID-19 will be observed. 

Compensation/Benefits

Pay is $29.07 for this hourly, part‐time non-exempt position (20 hours/week).  This is a non-benefitted position.

The position is expected to start in March 2024.
