A Bright Light in Early Winter: Nabi Youth Open House

In early December, Blossom House opened its doors for a vibrant Youth Open House that brought together youth, families, artists, and community partners for a celebratory evening. The event was organized in partnership with Athena Project to mark the Nabi Youth Space’s one-year anniversary at Blossom House.

“What was meant to be a one-year anniversary celebration turned into a showcase of youth services,” said Nabi Youth program director Ari Gonzalez. “It turned into something much larger, which we couldn’t have been happier about.”

In collaboration with Jaimie Vela, Lifespan Local’s director of operations and finance, the Athena Project curated a lively lineup of performers, filling the building with music and movement. Families enjoyed Indian dance and hip-hop by Roshni, youth folklorico dance by Folklorico De Colores, Polynesian and Samba dance by Bella Diva, and a youth mariachi band. DJ Cyn kept the energy high between sets, and Melissa Ivey made a special music-making station where younger children where invited to jump in and participate.

The space was intentionally set up in stations, with families hosting certain tables and activities, to encourage exploration and creativity. In the spirit of the holiday season, youth could pick out a gift for a loved one, make Christmas cards, and craft ornaments. Food trucks served an estimated 250 people, which Gonzalez notes is an impressive turnout for a midweek event in winter.

“A lot of families were able to learn about our services,” Gonzalez says, sharing that the event’s impact on young people was especially powerful. “At this event, it felt like the youth claimed this as a place where they can belong and connect,” she says. “Knowing that there’s a place they can come that feel safe—a place that’s for them and accessible—that’s really meaningful.”

More than only a celebration, the Youth Open House represented the many ways Blossom House operates as a welcoming hub where people of all ages and walks of life can gather, create, grow, and celebrate together.
